What is the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule and What Does it Cover?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a program offered by Medicare to children between 2-17 years of age. If eligible, it qualifies them to receive basic dental services funded by Medicare up to a total cost of $1156 over a period of 2 calendar years. This 2-year cap period starts at the beginning of the year with no rollover. This means you will need to use the $1156 within this timeframe as you won’t be able to carry it into the next 2-year period.
Your child can be covered for basic Medicare dental services, including:
- Fillings
- Check-ups and cleans
- Fissure sealants
- X-rays
- Tooth extractions
- Root canals
There are some dental services that the CDBS don’t cover. These include any cosmetic treatments, such as whitening and Invisalign, or any services provided in hospital. Unfortunately the scheme doesn't cover mouthguards, however we can arrange these for a fee if required

To be eligible to receive the CDBS, your child will need to be:
- Aged between 2-17 years of age
- Be eligible for Medicare on the day of treatment
- Be receiving an Australian Government payment

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a Medicare‑funded program that helps eligible children access basic dental care. It can contribute toward dental services such as check‑ups, cleans, fillings, extractions, X‑rays, fissure sealants and root canals over a defined 2‑year period.
What dental services are covered under the CDBS?
Under the CDBS, eligible children can receive a range of basic dental treatments including check‑ups, cleanings, X‑rays, fillings, fissure sealants, root canals and extractions. Cosmetic treatments, orthodontics (like braces), and hospital‑based dental services are not covered.
Who is eligible for the CDBS?
To qualify for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, your child must:
• Be aged between 2 and 17 at the time of treatment
• Be eligible for Medicare
• Be part of a family receiving an Australian Government payment that qualifies for the scheme.
How much can be claimed through the CDBS and how does it work?
Eligible children can access a capped amount of dental benefits over a 2‑calendar‑year period. The total benefit amount is indexed annually and must be used within that two‑year period — unused funds generally do not carry over to the next period.
