What’s it Like Getting Crowns Fitted? Getting crowns fitted by a dentist has several phases
01
Firstly we have a consultation and assessment of the tooth. This is often done at the exam and clean appointment – here we will discuss a range of options, costs and likely success rates for each procedure and answer any questions you may have.
02
At the next appointment we prepare the tooth for a crown. We numb the tooth, prepare it to the appropriate shape and take a number of impressions or scans. Then we make you a temporary crown which you will wear for two weeks. This appointment usually takes up to 90 minutes.
03
Finally we place the crown. We numb the area, check the fit of the crown, cement it in and adjust the bite. The goal is to have a beautiful, natural looking crown which fits accurately and feels comfortable.
Benefits and Risks of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are used to protect teeth that are already damaged or cracked. A helpful benefit is that they may improve the look of teeth that are shaped in an abnormal way or have been broken. Crowns fitted on the Gold Coast are designed to last for years after they are secured should they be cared for appropriately. However, there is the potential that for some reason they might become damaged or fall off early.
Possible reasons for this occurring include loss of adhesion in the cement used or because the tooth underneath has undergone further damage, meaning the crown no longer fits properly.

What Are Some Alternatives to Getting a Crown?
What about alternatives like veneers? Or can I get dental implants on the Gold Coast? Dental crowns are not the only solution to damaged or decayed teeth and there are alternatives available, including dental bridges, that can be fitted on the Gold Coast. Given the right case and conditions, our Gold Coast dentists might suggest veneers, dental bridges or other dental implants.
Gold Coast Veneers
If your aim is to solve some discolouration and shape issues, then you could consider getting veneers, which are essentially a thin mould that is attached to the front of a tooth. In the case of your tooth being chipped, the approach your dentist may take is to reconstruct and strengthen your tooth by making a filling. There are two main kinds of veneers – porcelain and composite – both of which are done in by the team at Fresh Family Dental in Burleigh Heads. Common services which are also carried out include general dental, children’s dental, emergency dental, teeth whitening, and root canals.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Our team of professional Gold Coast laboratories make top quality Porcelain veneers out of a material that is shaped like a thin wafer, which is then designed to personally and perfectly fit over your tooth. They will improve discolouration on your teeth, making them a more natural colour and can also enhance the structural strength of your tooth.
Sizing from anywhere between 0.3mm and 1mm, our expert team at Fresh Family Dental will hand-shape each tooth to ensure the fit is as perfect. With veneers, there is no one-size-fits-all approach meaning the utmost care and dedication is given to each individual product. There is no other way to recreate the natural look of a real tooth.

What Are Composite Veneers
In some cases, composite veneers may be the way to go and are a more affordable alternative compared to porcelain ones. Composite veneers are made from the same material used for white dental fillings and don’t need two sessions to be moulded and made.
The process is a bit simpler for composite veneers as opposed to porcelain veneers. The tooth is cleaned and lightly prepared before the dentist applies an adhesive which will be used to fasten the veneer to the tooth. The composite veneer will then be placed, shaped and polished. We sometimes suggest returning for an additional polishing appointment about a week later to make minor adjustments and check in on how you are adapting to your new teeth shape.
FAQs – Dental Crowns
What is a dental crown and why do I need one?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns protect teeth from further decay, restore their shape, and improve the appearance of your smile. They are commonly recommended after a large filling, root canal, or to repair a fractured tooth.
How long do dental crowns last?
With proper care, dental crowns can last 10–15 years or longer. Maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding hard foods, and regular dental check-ups can help extend the life of your crown.
What types of dental crowns are available?
We offer a variety of crowns including porcelain, ceramic, and metal options. Your dentist will help choose the best crown based on durability, appearance, and your specific dental needs.
Is getting a dental crown painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort. Local anaesthetic is used during the procedure, and any post-treatment sensitivity is usually temporary. Our team ensures your comfort throughout the process.
