What to Expect When Getting Dental Implants
A dental implant is not an immediate quick fix. The full turnaround can take around 4 months, including:
- Pre-op planning across two appointments.
- Surgery to place the “root” in the bone in one appointment.
- 3 months of healing time.
- Restoring the implant with the final crown over two to three appointments.
Before booking in for dental implants, our principal dentist, Dr. Andrea, will walk you through the process for your specific needs so you know exactly what to expect and when. Book an appointment today to get started.
Bridges, crowns or implants?
There are a few ways to repair or replace a missing or damaged tooth, the most common being bridges, crowns and dental implants. We often help people explore their options to find the most suitable solution for their lifestyle and oral health needs.

Bridges
A bridge is a way to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring a floating tooth connected to two crowns. Historically, this was the only option for replacing single teeth, and thankfully this is no longer the case. To place a bridge, neighbouring teeth will need reshaping to accommodate the bridge, which can be undesirable.

Crowns
Also known as a ‘tooth cap’, crowns help restore the strength, shape and appearance of a tooth by placing a dental prosthetic over an existing tooth. They cannot be used if the entire tooth is missing, but are often used to add additional protection after large fillings or root canal treatments.

Implants
An implant replaces the entire tooth, root included, by inserting a titanium post into the jawbone, and placing a crown on top. They are natural looking and feeling, and provide long-term results, often lasting 20+ years as opposed to the average 10+ years of a bridge.
Dental IMplant Frequently Asked Questions
Can you get a dental implant for just one tooth?
Yes, dental implants can replace a single missing tooth. As dental implants use a titanium post to replace the root, an abutment and a custom crown, it can replace a tooth without altering any surrounding teeth. They look and function like a natural tooth, and can last upwards of 20 years with the right care.
Can teeth implants be done in one day?
While immediate dental implants exist, our preference is to place them in a staged approach over 3-4 months. This provides time for pre-operative planning, surgery to replace the root, healing and placing of the crown, although the exact time can vary between people. Your dentist will provide guidance on what to expect.
Are dental implants suitable for everyone?
Not everyone is a candidate for tooth implants. To be eligible for dental implants, people typically need to be over the age of 30 and in good health, generally being a non-smoker and not having undergone head or neck radiation or have a history with certain medications. Diabetes and gum disease can also potentially complicate care, but this is something we assess on an individual basis The best way to know if implants are a suitable option is to book an appointment with your local dentist.
